How to Care For a Sick Dog

Healthy Food  |  Healthy Skin  |  Pet Insurance  |  Hip Problems

No matter how well you treat the family dog, your pet will experience sickness from time to time. Here are a few helpful hints of what to do as you care for your sick dog.

Patience is going to be the key in taking care of your sick dog. Remember that your pet is much like an infant, in that there are only a few ways for your dog to indicate discomfort or a need. You may need to practice some forbearance if your pet is whining due to pain and it is not time to administer more medication. Remind yourself that the situation is temporary and your dog will be better soon.

One of the best ways you can help your sick dog to heal is to make sure your pet is getting plenty of rest. Sleep helps just about every living thing to recuperate and gather strength. Your dog is no exception. As your sick dog is being nursed back to health, make sure the animal is in a comfortable place that is removed from distractions such as road noise or other sounds that might cause the dog to want to jump up and go investigate. If your pet responds well to music, try something that is light and melodious to help lull the dog to sleep.

Dehydration is one of the more severe problems that may impact a sick dog. Keep plenty of fresh water within easy reach, so the dog can help himself with a minimum of effort. Make sure the animal is in a cool area and check for a fever now and then. There are supplements on the market that will help keep your pet hydrated. If your pet continues to have trouble with maintaining hydration, your veterinarian should able to recommend medication that will help.

Speaking of medication, make sure you administer the recommended dosage at the recommended time. Your veterinarian knows what a sick dog needs, and has proscribed the medication accordingly. Do not second guess the vet, or try to take short cuts. If you think your pet is not responding to the medication as the vet indicated was normal, then let the vet know immediately.

Caring for a sick dog is a labor of love. Keeping that in mind, you can care for your pet during a time of illness and look forward to many healthy days to come.
