Common Dog Skin Problems

Dogs are likely to develop a number of skin irritants during their lives. Here are some examples of common dog skin problems and how to identify them.

Lick Granuloma probably is the single most common type of dog skin problems. This occurs when the dog continually licks at a spot, such as on a paw or the ankle. The licking will produce an area that develops into a bright red skin ulcer. If not treated, the spot can become infected and create all sorts of problems for your pet.

Pollens are the root cause of several dog skin problems. Seasonal allergens can settle into the dog's coat and work their way to the skin, where they cause severe itching. This condition is referred to as canine atopy. Keeping your pet bathed during those months when the pollen count is higher will help alleviate this condition.

Fleas cause a lot of dog skin problems and can drive your dog crazy from itching and scratching. Evidence of fleas may appear as bumps around the base of the tail, along the back legs and on the stomach and thighs. Look for tiny black and white flecks, which indicate the presence of not only fleas but also eggs.

Grubs are fly larvae that are around an inch in length and can burrow down into the skin, causing lumps that can develop into open sores. A number of dog skin problems can be created by grubs and also lead to other health ailments as well.

Chiggers are a painful irritation for any dog. With the appearance of very faint red, orange, or yellow flecks, chiggers cause constant itching and irritation between a dog's toes. As the dog scratches and bites at the chiggers, the infection can transfer to the mouth and from there to the ears. Chiggers open the door for several dog skin problems to arise, as the irritation spreads.

It is important to watch for these and other skin problems and treat your animal as quickly as possible. While there are some over the counter product you can use that will help in some cases, it is always advisable to take your pet to a veterinarian, so your dog can be checked for any other issues that may be the cause of the problem, or may have developed as a result of the health issue you are aware of.
