Dog Eye Health Ailments and How to Recognize Them

Healthy Food  |  Healthy Skin  |  Pet Insurance  |  Hip Problems

We don't often think about our pets developing eye problems. But the truth of the matter is that our dogs can suffer from a number of dog eye health ailments. Here's a little information about the more prevalent dog eye health problems and how to recognize them. The single most common type of dog eye health condition is conjunctivitis. Essentially, this is an inflammation of membranes of the eye. The irritation caused by the condition results in an increased blood flow to the eye, resulting in a swollen red condition that causes a lot of discomfort. At first, any discharge from the eye may be clear, but as the infection worsens it will become milky. Should you notice the first stages of conjunctivitis with your dog, get the animal to a veterinarian immediately. Little or no permanent damage will occur if the condition is treated early.

Keratitis is a dog eye health issue that has to do with a lack of proper moisture to the eye. Just like humans, a dog requires moisture in order for the eyes to remain healthy and functional. Should you notice a thick discharge appearing in the corner of the eye, accompanied by more prominent blood vessels, your dog may very well have keratitis. Again, this is a condition the vet can treat.

A third type of dog eye health problem is dermatitis. This condition is identified by an inflammation of the eyelid. This inflammation comes about due to bacteria, which collects and sets up an infection. Your dog may have dermatitis if you notice a swelling of the eyelid. In advanced cases, the bacteria will spread to the eye itself, causing your animal a great deal of discomfort. As is true with any health problem, it is important to consult your veterinarian when you become aware of any dog eye health problem. If caught early, the treatments may be as simple as administering eye drops several times a day, or perhaps some type of oral medication.
