Identifying and Treating Dog Breathing Problems
There are a number of reasons why your pet may experience dog breathing problems. Knowing the likely origin of the issue can help you to understand what kind of treatment will be most effective. Here are a few examples of common dog breathing problems and what you can do about them. Kennel cough is a very common example of dog breathing problems. Basically, this is an ailment that can be caught when dogs are kept in close quarters for an extended period of time. Examples include a pet hotel, grooming salons or an animal shelter. Often, dogs that are rescued from a local pet shelter will need to be treated for this type of breathing problem. A qualified veterinarian can prescribe medication that will clear up kennel cough in a matter of days. Irritants in the air can cause dog breathing problems. The irritants may be natural, such as pollen. The origin of the breathing problem could also be perfumes, tobacco smoke, or even a room deodorizer. If you notice that your pet begins to experience wheezing or coughing when any of these irritants are present, remove your pet from the area immediately. Typically, the dog's breathing will return to normal in a short time and the coughing will abate. As much as possible, eliminate any airborne elements that seem to trigger an allergic reaction for your pet. Some dog breathing problems will require extended care. Two examples would be if your dog has asthma or bronchitis. With both of these conditions, a vet's care is absolutely necessary. Regular medications will be part of the daily routine for your pet, and you may find it necessary to restrain your dog from running or playing in certain types of weather. Pet medicine today can deal effectively with these conditions; when coupled with some basic lifestyle guidelines for the animal, you can ensure that your dog is happy and relatively pain free. As always, you should consult a veterinarian whenever you notice your pet has a recurring health issue. Dog breathing problems can be managed and in some cases cured. For more information on breathing problems, consult a veterinarian in your area.
